Frequently Asked TAX Questions
WELCOME!

To help you familiarize you with the Town of Gorham’s Tax Office, the following is general information that you may wish to know:

What is the tax year?
Throughout the State of New Hampshire, the tax year runs from April 1st to March 31st.  Assessment of your property value is made as of April 1st of each tax year and appears on you tax bill.

How often and when will I be billed?
There are two tax bills each year.  The first bill of the year is an estimate, based on one-half of the previous year’s tax.  This tax bill is mailed out near the end of May, is usually due July 1st every year.  The tax rate is set in the fall of the year, after which the bill is printed.  This bill is calculated using the new rate multiplied by our property’s assessed value as of April 1st.  This bill is usually mailed at the end of October and due by December 1st.

What if I didn’t get a tax bill?
Bills are sent to the address of the last known owner by state law.  The Tax Assessor’s Office updates its records according to transfer information received from the Coos County Registry of Deeds after the deed are recorded.  Your attorney or closing company should have checked the status of taxes due.  However, it is your responsibility as a new owner to make sure taxes are paid and to advise us of your current mailing address in writing.  If you have any questions about this, refer to your closing statement and/or give us a call.  Interest at 12% annum is charged on tax bills not paid by the due date.

Do we have your correct mailing address?
All bills will be mailed to the last known address as shown on our records.  If any correspondence has been forwarded to you by the post office, keep in mind they will only forward mail for one year.  It is your responsibility to notify the Tax Assessor’s office if you change your address.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
